Teachers & Training

We have been training teachers for over 25 years and have grown together in strength, loyalty and friendship. Our own local Yoga tutors train the students and we invite internationally recognised tutors for weekend seminars. These seminars are an integral part of the course. For example, in the past we have invited Howard Kent, Paul Harvey, Ken Thompson, Philip Jones, Nancy Ford-Kohne, Lilias Folan. Danielle Arin, Swami Shivapremenanda and Dr Samprasad Vinod, one of our Patrons.

The training course covers all aspects of Yoga:

• Asanas, Pranayama, Bandha, Mudra, Kryias, Yoga Philosophy, Meditation

• Anatomy and Physiology (certificate awarded) and Principles of Teaching

• Stress Management/Relaxation and Process Awareness (personal development)

• Child protection and First Aid seminars

Our local tutors are listed below:

Anatomy & Physiology: Dr Ruth Gilmore, senior lecturer for Yoga Bio Medical Trust, London.

Asanas: Moira Harper and Frank Moylan, YFNI trained tutors. Moira has been invited to tutor at two British Wheel of Yoga Congresses and Frank is a trained sports injuries practitioner, who has been invited to lecture first year medical students at Queen’s University on the benefits of Yoga. Guest Asana tutors will be invited also.

Yoga Philosophy: Helen MacBroom, who first trained at the Bihar Ashram in Belfast and then became a BWY teacher.

Pranayama: Margaret Brand, Senior Tutor with YFNI for over twenty-five years, who is an artist and sculptress in her own right.

Principles of Teaching: Jane Wright BA, a YFNI trained teacher with over 20 years’ experience, who obtained her degree from Trinity College, Dublin

Stress Management/Relaxation: Liz Comerton, former Senior Lecturer in Physical Education, Jordanstown, Patron and stress management consultant.

We run a course in the third year course of the Teacher Training Course in advanced Yoga studies for students and teachers (a certificate is awarded)

As we are the governing body of Yoga so recognised by the NI Sports Council, health and safety are our first criteria. As a result of a directive from the Sports Council all our teachers now have to attend a Child Protection seminar. Teacher training students will receive a certificate in Anatomy & Physiology and all must attend First Aid course.

As we are affiliated to the Irish Yoga Federation we have upgraded the number of hours for our course to over 600+ in two years, 400+ of which are contact teaching hours, which compares favourably with British Wheel of Yoga teacher training courses. We have an outside assessor who assesses our course once a year. Teaching practice assessment takes place twice in the second year.

Once our students are ready for teaching practice we notify the Education and Library Boards, with whom we have close links, recreation centres and centres where Yoga is taught for placement of the students.

Teachers’ names appear in our teachers register, and in the magazine, published twice a year, and also on our website. We have an answering service and County Representatives who keep people advised about classes, courses, etc.

In order to keep our teachers interested in furthering their practice of Yoga, we run Continuing Professional Development Scheme (CPD), whereby teachers are required to attend to Yoga seminars a year, either with the Fellowship or other courses, in which case written evidence must be produced of attendance. If a teacher does not attend as required no insurance cover is granted. This is an effort to make our teachers as professional as possible, and to grow in the knowledge and love of Yoga practices. (This was decided by members of YFNI at an Annual General Meeting.) All teachers (and members) receive a discount on our Yoga days.

We provide information in our magazine twice a year which gives full information about our Yoga days/courses and also includes a form for membership of the Fellowship, which our teachers are encouraged to distribute to their students.

YFNI teachers are covered by Public Liability insurance as follows:

Limit of Indemnity £5,000,000

This Public Liability Insurance is in respect of the Legal Liability of the Insured for negligence on their part or that of their members resulting in bodily injury or damage and includes Stress Management and Relaxation Courses.

YFNI teachers are eligible to teach Yoga in any part of Ireland, north or south.

If you require any further information please contact the Treasurer.
