21 Sept 2019 - YFNI Presents Finding Ease, Nurturing Resilience with Mairead Flynn

from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm

Finding Ease, Nurturing Resilience

We live in interesting times!  While the world seems to get ever more crazy – trauma therapists are declaring that just to be alive in the 21st century constitutes trauma – there is also a quiet revolution happening in our collective understanding of how we can take care of ourselves and one another in all the joys and sorrows of our human journey.

I’ve had the privilege of participating in some small way in this quiet revolution for 40 years (Yes, I look at the calendar and see that on this very day, 21 Sept 1979 I was initiated as Swami Om Saraswati, and began my first lifetime as yoga teacher!).  Several ashrams, convents and many short haircuts later, you’d think I should have all the answers… alas, I don’t!

But I’m happy to share something of what I’ve picked up along the way.  Particularly I hope to focus on the ‘neuroscience of resilience’… a very modern field of study, which again and again bows to and confirms the insights of ancient wisdom (Yoga, Vedanta, Buddhism).

Our time together will include:

  • Some gentle yoga and mindfulness practice (interspersed throughout the day)
  • Exploring how these practices can be honed to shift the nervous system from the physiology of survival to the physiology of ease, safety and connection
  • A dip into Steve Porges’ Polyvagal Theory and the role of the vagus nerve in maintaining mental, physical and relational health.
  • A consideration of some practical ways to improve ‘vagal tone’
  • Time to create a personal plan to nurture your own resilience, based on a model I use called ‘The Six Petals of Resilience’

Hopefully all of the above will weave together like a beautiful tapestry around themes of nurture, nervous system regulation and self-care, rather than a collection of separate topics!  And hopefully our work together will in itself be an experience of safety, ease and connection – essential supports for nervous system regulation.

If you feel the need to step back and give yourself a little space… this might be just what you’re looking for!

Look forward to seeing you there!

Mairead Flynn...

was one of the first Yoga teachers trained in N Ireland way back in 1979.  Her first training in the Satyananda tradition involved a decade of ashram life in Belfast, India and Singapore.  Drawn to the ‘viniyoga’ tradition she trained with Paul Harvey in Bristol 2000–2006, and then worked with Peter Hersnack from 2007 until his passing in 2016.

Fascinated by ‘the human condition’ Mairead has explored many body-mind approaches and has qualified as Reflexologist, Stress Management Therapist, Teacher of MBSR, Somatic Experiencing Practitioner and Gestalt Practitioner.

In her work with groups and individuals Mairead’s greatest passion is help people restore nervous system regulation, thereby restoring their capacity for ease, vitality and connection.  Most recently Mairead has rediscovered an old enthusiasm and is retraining as a teacher of Circle Dance … loving the fun and social engagement which are so, so good for building resilience!
